Sleep Number Bed (Select Comfort) PART 4
Continued from The Sleep Number Bed (Select Comfort) PART 3
Yup, there was mold embedded into both air chamber fibers on my Sleep Number bed, and the chambers were wet. I checked recent news websites and learned there was a pending class action lawsuit against Select Comfort for mold in their beds. (See update below for lawsuit information.) And the company was telling customers mold in beds was normal and to scrub the chambers with bleach to kill the mold.
I tried the bleach scrub before calling the company just to have that already done when I called to demand a refund, but as I suspected, it did nothing.
When I called, they told what they had been telling other customers--to scrub the air chambers with bleach and that mold was normal. Having done it, I rebutted that it didn't work and mold in beds is not normal. The Select Comfort representative countered with, "How do you know? Have you ever seen the inside of a mattress."
"Yes. As a matter of fact, I have." And I explained how I had seen the inside of an innerspring mattress, that there was not mold in that old bed, and that my husband Jim was allergic to mold and had been suffering daily migraines upon awakening.
The rep didn't know what to say. I demanded a refund even though the bed was six years old, and insisted Select Comfort also pay for return shipping, which they normally do not.
After much rebuttal and my persistence, Select Comfort finally agreed to my terms, but I had to supply the return shipping boxes. No problem. They probably figured it was better to have me out of the class action lawsuit, for if Select Comfort refunded our money, I'd have to be excluded from the suit.
It took forever for the refund to come because it kept getting lost in their system, but many weeks later, we finally received it.
We slept on the floor for about six months after that on our memory foam mattress topper, and the first night on the floor, I slept far better than I had for the previous six years. And then I noticed the body impressions in our mobile home floor. We needed a replacement mattress soon, or we risked going through the floor. So I asked God for a mattress.
That week--I kid you not--my mom called. "Do you want a bed?" she asked. My mouth dropped and I almost didn't know what to say.
It turned out that the homeless shelter where her husband, Tom, worked had been given a new queen sized mattress and box spring by a local mattress company, but they had no one who could use it. The shelter didn't want to turn it away and lose future mattress donations, so they asked Tom if he knew someone who needed a bed. He instantly thought of Jim and me.
So, after six years of suffering with the Sleep Number Select Comfort bed because I believed their deceptive advertising, God took it away, refunded our money, and gave us a new replacement bed for free.
That new mattress set is what we're sleeping on today, and nights are much more comfortable. Jim no longer awakens every night with migraines, he hasn't had severe back pain every day, and my back/neck/head/shoulder pain is nowhere near what it had been, although I seem to have permanent shoulder damage from my shoulder getting crushed on the Sleep Number bed each night.
Overall, if you are determined to purchase a Sleep Number Select Comfort bed, buy the model with the most foam on top, but you're better off going with a foam only bed.

UPDATE (June 30, 2008): A class action lawsuit has now been filed against Select Comfort Corporation for mold in their beds. Please see the Select Comfort Class Action Litigation Web page for more details if you own a Select Comfort bed purchased between 1987-2005.

I heard about these beds, and due to my neck issues, this sounded great, and my friend has one...she said she would pay double for this thing..Well I didn't get the sleep number but ended up getting a pretty plush comfort mattress, but due to the chainsaw like snoring of the man that shares my room, I have been sleepin' on my couch!!! He's 6'8" or I would of course make him sleep on it.. grrr...
Thanks so much for this valuable information on mattresses- I was considering the 'Select Comfort', but now know to steer away from that one! We are long overdue to replace our mattress, but it is difficult to figure out the choices.
It was encouraging to hear how God worked this out for you( His timing is perfect- I need to trust that more)
As an employee of Select Comfort and a Sleep Number bed owner, I apologize for your poor experience with the bed. It’s disheartening to hear when someone has tried the bed and not received the customer satisfaction that Select Comfort is committed to.
We appreciate your honest feedback and will use it to continue improving the quality of our product and service. Select Comfort values customer comments. Thanks for taking the time to share a detailed review of the Sleep Number bed and your experience.

Wow, our experience couldn't be any different. We LOVE our sleep number bed that we've had for 6 years - a king sized classic model. We did have to get one air chamber replaced when we first got it because there seemed to be a bubble of air in one section of the chamber that was always sticking out. They replaced it with no problem. The bed works great as my husband likes a really firm mattress and I like it somewhere in the middle.
I'm glad you stuck to your guns and got your refund though.
This information is highly valuable, as my wife and I have been trying to figure out what we need to do in regards to the health issue which has resulted from the mold on our Sleep Number bed.
Friends have suggested the bleach method, however bleach is not an acceptable solution to the problem as this is an issue with the product.
Apparently there have been a number of lawsuits over this mold issue. With that in mind my guess is that the comment by "LeeAnn" is nothing more than damage control. her apology is about as sincere as a politicians promise to not raise taxes.
"Health issue"??? Give me a break. The mold is the same type of mold you have in your air-vents and in the compressor of your refrigerator. Plus, it's found in beds of ALL types, you just can't open them up to look at it. There's no health issue. Just some psychosomatic illness because you want there to be. I'd be more worried about the mold in your airvents, since that actually gets circulated where you breathe. It even could be your pillows. Seriously. Make an educated comment, or just stay off the internet. It's safer for all that way.
I love my SN bed, have had it for 12 years, had mold once (I live in a humid climate). Select Comfort replaced the parts for free. Just to check out what they said, I tore my old innerspring apart (in the guest room), and guess what. SURPRISE!!! Mold. All over the pad and the metal coils (from water condensing on those). Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there.
Thanks for posting. I bought a Sleep Number bed in 2003 and just this past weekend, in 2010 found out about the mold issue AFTER I opened my mattress. I had not opened it in years. I wanted to sell it, was never happy with it and was taking pictures. I also found mold! They NEVER contacted me or any customers and have known about the problem for years. Meanwhile, they would send me information on how to upgrade my bed and try to sell me more beds! Typical corporate thinking-money vs customers. PR and spin doctors in overdrive. SOME people are highly allergic and have weak immune systems and mold, even household mold, CAN cause them HARM. I spoke with my allergy doctor after finding the mold (yes I got sick during the time I have had the bed and have been on weekly shots). She was shocked to hear about mold in the bed. The ignorant comment from the person who claims mold is everywhere and does not hurt people obviously does not know about medicine or weak immune systems, everyone is different. If you watch the TV show "Extreme Home Makeover" they often feature homes with mold (pre destruction)and discuss how harmful it can be if people have health problems, like many featured on the show. It does not take a rocket scientist. I WILL be getting rid of this bed, IF I can find someone who will buy it. I have since found LOTS of complaints on the internet about the mold and other issues. Sorry Select Comfort took the Toyota route and purposely kept info. from their customers, waiting for them to discover the mold and contact them. That is piss poor management to say the least! I am glad you all got a refund. I will be lucky to sell mine for $200. Good riddance.
