Sleep Number Bed (Select Comfort) PART 2

Continued from The Sleep Number Bed (Select Comfort) PART 1

Our queen sized classic (comparable with the current model 3000) mattress and foundation arrived in huge boxes. I was elated at how light the mattress was to move without springs, and the foundation moved from room to room with ease because it came in separated interlocking strips of a plastic material.

We unpacked the outer mattress cover, air chambers, outer and inner foam strips (about 8" cube thickness), air pump with its hoses and controls, and then plugged in the pump to fill it with air. The pump's plastic case vibrated as it filled the bed and hurt my ears, but I was so excited about the bed that I passed it off.

That night as we slept and tried to find the right "sleep number" we quickly learned the pump's racket was not conducive to a good night's sleep. (Our control didn't actually have numbers on them, only an up and down button to indicate hardness.) We'd have to start out the beginning of the night hard and press the air release button or try to figure it out during the day.

The only problem was over the course of the next month, neither Jim nor I could find a setting that worked. The most comfortable parts of the bed were the outside edge and middle where the foam casing enclosed the air chamber, and we kept rolling into the middle and landing on top of one another. And because Jim was heavier than I was, whatever softness I set didn't matter. Jim's weight always displaced to my side making my chamber hard anyway.

The Sleep Number Bed was not only uncomfortable, it actually caused more severe pain for both Jim and I.

When I called the company (several times) about it, they insisted I hadn't found the right setting yet. Dummy me believed them. Besides, I learned the return shipping was on our tab to the tune of about $50.

Jim, however, didn't care. He wanted the bed gone. But I yapped back like a dummy on a stick what the many Select Comfort customer service reps said--that we just hadn't found the right setting yet--until our trial period ended. (Wives, it's a good idea to listen to your husbands. They really could know what they're talking about even if we don't think so at the time.)

A year later when such severe back, neck, and head pain each morning made me dread going to bed when I used to love it brought me to my senses. I had been brainwashed.

Way to trash a company after buying the cheapest bed they have and expecting it to perform like and average priced bed. A decent spring bed will cost more than $1000 and good luck getting anyone to honor a warranty. I had a Simmons that I loved, until 2 years into it it started to sag. $1800 down the drain. I now have a Select Comfort 5000 and love it. No more back pain and i actually sleep at night. Good Luck finding a good matress for $600. You'll spend that over and over again.

Well, you know, Leadbottom, I admitted to being brainwashed by advertising. I really thought by the pressure map that the classic model was better. Don't ask me how--anyone with half a brain can see from looking at the whole picture that the nicer models would be better, but I was looking solely at that pressure map.

Uh... I just admitted to having less than half a brain...

Anyway, the fact is the bed still caused more pain than we began with.

Stay tuned, because there's more including how we tried to remedy the pain. Hint: we sought foam mattress toppers. *whistling while looking away sheepishly*

We had the same problem with our sleep number. We sold it to someone else who was more than happy to buy it for almost what we paid. Better than having it sit around in boxes or adding to the trash pile at the dump!

Wow, I love my sleep number bed, and it was the best way I ever spent my income tax refund! I must have a different model than yours.

I will say that the frame they sell/bring with the bed is absolute junk. We've managed to crack the thing during our Saturday Morning Wrestling Matches with the kids--so now it's propped up wth books and boards. Awaiting the time when I have extra funds to buy a nice bedframe! :)

Anyway... looking forward to reading part 3!
