Correct Letter Enunciation in my Preschooler!
EJ turned four last month and I've noticed that unlike most of my kids at his age (and beyond), he's interested in learning letters and numbers. Since I have homeschooling roots after homeschooling my kids for four years (and leftover unfinished books--our kids entered public school mid-year for refusing to listen to me) I've decided to do home preschool with EJ.He looks forward to it and actually seems to understand what I'm teaching him. As we worked through his kindergarten language arts book this morning and he repeated the alphabet after me, I heard something incredible: well, for my family, that is.
He repeated every letter correctly! L's were L's. R's were R's. And he made clear distinction with his lips and tongue between M and N. Amazing.
So far, every one of my kids has not been able to articulate letters that well that early, especially R. And according to speech therapists, the R sound is most difficult because kids have to learn to pull the tongue back in the mouth to pronounce the sound. (Try it and see what your tongue does.) This capability usually shows up around age five. So that means EJ's excelling. For the first time, I have a kid who enjoys learning, which means I enjoy teaching like I always wanted to but never could because my kids fought me.
YAY!
