Framing Windows

To begin framing a window, Jim cuts a 2x4 to the rough opening size.

He pries the cut beam away from the plywood...

...and does the same with the second board in the opening.

Jim grabs the first measured and cut 2x6 for the framing...

...and lays it.

He checks to make sure it's level. A wise carpenter once told him that if he takes the extra time to do this when framing, he won't have to mess with shims upon putting in the actual window.

Gotta nail it down.

The next board goes up on the left side of the opening.

And then the right.

Two boards go on top. This one is for the back side of the window. Jim leaves a space which he will later fill with insulation.

He nails it down on both ends and into the remaining stud pieces.

The front top board goes in.

Time to cut the opening.

Out comes the largest piece in the opening.

Now the small piece.

Jim stands in the completed window.

Here's the right and back sides of the house with almost all window openings done. You can see the back door. To the left of it will be another window over kitchen countertops. We'll frame it after we know how tall the cabinets and countertop will be. At a later date, we'll build a garage on this right side of the house where there are no top windows. It will extend beyond the back of the house and include a walkway to the back door. Oh how happy I'll be carrying groceries to the kitchen once that's done!

Voila! The front and left side of the house. It's nice to see our home coming together.
